Friday night the Union County Stadium lights will turn on and shine on four of the state’s top football programs. Spartanburg, Woodruff, Mid-Carolina and Union County will compete in the 2010 Union County Scrimmage.

The scrimmage format will be slightly different than before as fans will get a chance to see present and the future. Junior varsity teams will compete and have a chance to showcase their talents under the Friday night lights before their varsity counterparts.

“We felt like this gives JV a game type situation,” Union County athletic director Mike Massey said.

The JV games will play two 10-minute running quarters. Each game will start on the 30-yard line and kicking plays will not be live.

Varsity teams will play two 12-minute game type quarters. All kicking will be live.

The first game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. between Woodruff and Spartanburg’s JV teams. Immediately following the first game, Woodruff and Spartanburg’s varsity squads will square off at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Union County and Mid-Carolina’s JV teams will start at approximately 7:30 p.m. and then the Yellow Jackets’ varsity team will take field vs. Mid-Carolina at 8:00 p.m.

Admission is $5 and only SCHSL passes will be accepted.

This year, Union County fans have several ways to save a little money at athletic events. Yellow Jacket fans can purchase 10-game passes that saves 20% off normal gate admission prices. Normally, if you attended ten games you would spend $50 on tickets, but the 10-game passes are sold for $40. This grants admission in to ANY ten UCHS sporting events held in Union County. The passes never expire and multiple passes can be bought from UCHS.

“This is just one way for us to help families,” Massey said.

The 10-game passes are on sale now at UCHS.

Also, senior passes are available for any Union County citizen who is or will be 60 before Jan. 2011. Senior passes grant free admission to every UCHS athletic event held in Union County. Senior passes will be made Tuesday, Aug. 24 in the main lobby of UCHS between 5:30-7 p.m. A UCHS staff member will be there to take pictures and print the senior IDs. A driver’s license or photo ID is required. If you have a senior pass, you do not need to have another one made.

“This is a way for us to give back to those who have always been involved,” Union County High School Principal Joe Walker said.

For further information regarding passes, call Mike Massey at 429-1750 ext. 14.

UCHS vs. Mid-Carolina preview

Mid-Carolina comes into Friday night’s contest vs. Union after a come from behind victory over A.C. Flora 10-9. The offense resembles that of past UCHS teams. Mid-Carolina will be led by quarterback Kendall Lathrop and will operate primarily from the double-wing but will use the spread offense at times.

Mid-Carolina lost over two-thirds of its offensive production to graduation last year. However — their second leading rusher from ’09— running back Clarence Turner returns for his senior year.

Defensively, Mid-Carolina has three of last year’s leading tacklers returning to give added experience to the linebacker position.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a strong showing in Tuesday’s scrimmage vs. Chesnee. Both sides of the ball looked sharp against the 2A school. Defensively, the Jackets will need to continue its pursuit of the ball and also be able to control the line of scrimmage. The key to Friday night’s game vs. Mid-Carolina will be to stop the run, and expect to see the Jackets in the backfield all night.

Offensively, the Jackets need to continue adding to their confidence. The talent is there and with more consistency, the younger skilled players will shine. The key to Friday night’s game will be to make the big play early and boost the morale of a unit held scoreless in last week’s Clinton Jamboree.

Key players to watch
