Work continues on fixing the southbound lanes on US 176 just south of Jonesville. The section of the highway is expected to be closed through Sept. 3.
The section of the southbound lanes between the intersection of US 176 and Forest Street in Jonesville and the highway intersection with New Hope Church Road has been closed to traffic since Aug. 9. The section is closed while repairs are made to a sinkhole that opened up the night of Aug. 5. The sinkhole was caused when part of a culvert running under the four-lane gave way.
Jason Childers, resident maintenance foreman for the SCOT in Union County, said its been determined that the part of the culvert running undernearth the nortbound lanes is also showing signs of strain. Childers said plans are to replace the entire culvert so as to prevent a sinkhole from forming on the northbound lanes or reforming on the southbound lanes.
The culvert, which is 36 inches wide and 408 feet long, is 60 feet beneath the surface of the road. The sinkhole is eight feet wide at the surface, 25 feet wide at the bottom and 23 feet deep.
Childers said despite this he believes repairs will be finished around their scheduled completion date of Sept. 3 barring weather or other complications. He said the replacement will not effect traffic on the northbound lanes.
While the culvert is being replaced and the sinkhole being repaired, southbound traffic will be detoured along the following route:
• Begin at the intersection of US 176 (Furman Fendley Highway) and S-44-12 (Forest Street), turn left onto S-44-12 (Forest Street) and proceed northeast for 1.15 miles to SC 9 (Main Street). Turn right onto SC 9 (Main Street) and proceed for 1.16 miles to the junction of SC 9 (Jonesville-Lockhart Highway) and SC 18 (Jonesville Highway). Traffic will bear right along SC 18 (Jonesville Highway) for 0.84 miles to the intersection of S-44-407 (New Hope Church Road) and proceed 0.75 miles to US 176 (Furman Fendley Highway).
The net length of the detour is 1.72 miles.
An optional detour for truck traffic is the following route:
• Begin at the intersection of US 176 (Furman Fendley Highway) and S-44-12 (Forest Street), turn left onto S-44-12 (Forest Street) and proceed northeast for 1.15 miles to SC 9 (Main Street). Turn right onto SC 9 (Main Street) and proceed for 1.16 miles to the junction of SC 9 (Jonesville-Lockhart Highway) and SC 18 (Jonesville Highway). Traffic will bear right along SC 18 (Jonesville Highway) for 0.84 miles to the intersection of S-44-407 (New Hope Church Road). Continue in a southerly direction for 6.39 miles to the intersection of US 176 Connector (Connector Road). Traffic will bear right onto the US 176 Connector and continue in a westerly direction for 0.46 miles to the intersection of US 176 (Furman Fendley Highway).
The net length of this detour is 7.83 miles.
