The Union County Sheriff's Office is investigating two possible cases of arson that occurred last week.

The first incident occurred sometime between midnight-2 a.m. Wednesday at 1441 Peach Orchard Road, Union. The incident report states the victim told the responding deputy she believed someone came to the outbuilding behind her residence and set fire to the grass and kudzu around the structure. The report states the deputy was the first on the scene and by the time he arrived the victim had nearly extinguished the blaze. The only damage was where the fire had gone up the down spout and burned the side of the outbuilding. Damage was estimated at $100.

The second incident occurred sometime between 11:30 p.m. Thursday and just after 12:30 a.m. Friday at a residence at 331 Osborne St., Union. The incident report states the victim came out of his house and saw small flames in two different spots on the side of the building. The victim was able to quickly extinguish the blaze which caused an estimated $100 damage to the building.

Vandalism

Law enforcement also is investigating several cases of vandalism reported in the last several weeks.

Car Vandalized

Deputies are investigating an incident that occurred sometime between 8 a.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday when someone vandalized a 2000 Honda parked in a parking lot on Lakeside Drive. The damage, which was estimated at $500, included scratches on the front fender, hood and left door.

Mailboxes Vandalized

Also under investigation by the sheriff's office are two incidents in which mailboxes were vandalized. The first incident occurred sometime between 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 8:30 a.m. Aug. 10 when someone damaged a mailbox at 308 Joe Walker Road, Union, causing $25 worth of damage.

The second incident occurred just after 1 a.m. Thursday when a mailbox at 585 Sardis Road, Union, was bashed in causing $100 damage. The incident report states two other mailboxes on the road were dented and a third knocked completely off. The complainant told the responding deputy she saw a light-colored four-door vehicle, possibly an early 1990s model Honda, with an extremely loud muffler in front of her home when the incident took place. She said the vehicle had its lights off and traveled up Sardis Road toward Deepwater Road.

Building Vandalized

Deputies are also investigating an act of vandalism at 204 Ballfield Road, Lockhart, in which someone broke out the two front windows and damaged a door at the concession stand. The incident occurred sometime between 8 a.m. July 19 and 8 a.m. Wednesday. The report states it appeared someone tried to kick in the door. Nothing was reported missing but damage to the building was estimated at $250.

Door Vandalized

A door at a residence at 131 Lukesville Road, Union, was damaged sometime between 6 p.m. July 1 and 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9 by someone apparently trying to break into the building. It is believed the vandal failed to actually get into the building but caused $200 worth of damage to the door.

Boat Vandalized

A man went to put his boat in the water Wednesday morning only to discover it was the target of vandals.

The incident states the victim said he noticed the boat wouldn't go into gear and approximately four gallons of gas was missing from the gas tank. The victim said he keeps the boat under a tarp on his carport at 424 Peach Orchard Road, Union, and that it was fine when he checked it around 8 p.m. Aug. 9. He said the tarp was not loose so whoever was in the boat must have put the tarp back in place since he didn't notice anything until he got to the lake around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The boat is a camouflage-colored aluminum Duracraft with a Rhino liner and 25HP Yamaha motor. Damage was estimated at $250 but the victim said it was possible the depth finder may have also been damaged. The value of the gas missing is estimated at $10.

There were no signs of forced entry but more than $2,000 worth of equipment was taken from the fire station at 263 Phillipi Church Road, Union, between midnight-3 p.m. Aug. 9. Among the items taken were a 35-foot ladder from a fire truck, four traffic vests, red Paula Dean cookware, four traffic lights and a six-foot plastic table. The recovered items, which have a combined value of $75, include three Drug Store Street signs, two Roundtree Road signs, a Fire Lane sign, a Church Street sign, a Cross Street sign and a Westville Street sign. The license plate, which had a value of $25, had been registered to a Woodruff resident but had expired.

Pointing A Firearm

The sheriff’s office is also investigating an incident in which a rifle was fired in the direction of a residence at 511 Haney Road, Jonesville. The incident report states that between Aug. 10 and Aug. 12 a sliver pickup truck had been coming onto the property and a rifle was fired at or in the direction of the victim’s home.
