A rivalry dating back to 1921 has found new meaning in recent years. Clinton has dominated in the past five years by winning six out of the last eight games vs. the Yellow Jackets for what has become one of the best match-ups in the state.

Head coach David Lipsey and his Yellow Jackets’ football team look to set the bar for the 2010 season as they travel to play the Clinton Red Devils in the Clinton Jamboree tonight in a match-up of region foes.

Friday night’s scrimmage game will not show in the record column, but there will be much to prove for the two teams.

The Red Devils are coming off a state championship season after defeating UCHS in the third round of playoffs 17-14. UCHS led 14-0 at halftime but would give up 17 unanswered points in the final half.

Clinton would go on to defeat Daniel and Myrtle Beach for the 3A champhionship.

UCHS finished 7-6 overall last season, and 3-2 in region play which proved good enough to be named region co-champions but the team is not satisfied with last season’s showing.

UCHS will carry an experienced defensive squad to Clinton. The Yellow Jackets have eight starters returning from last year’s team. The defense is anchored by JaShawn Thompson and Desmond Floyd, who recently committed to Wake Forest.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets will rely heavily on the spread offense this year.  Sophomore quarterback Keiston Smith’s strong arm and the ability to scramble will give opposing defenses trouble. Smith possesses all the tools of a standout quarterback in this style of offense. Wide receivers Victor Ruth and Dierris Beacham have the ability to spark the offense with their big-play potential.

The Clinton Jamboree will be held tonight at Wilder Stadium at 7 p.m. Laurens will play Woodruff in the first half. Clinton and Union County’s game will be immediately following the first half action between the Raiders and Wolverines. Tickets are $6.
