Keys left in a car made it easy for a thief to steal a 2001 Dodge Durango but GPS helped the Union Public Safety Department find it.

The incident report states an officer was dispatched Aug. 5 to a business at 100 N. Duncan Bypass in response to a report of a stolen car. The owner stated he’d sold the vehicle to the victim but the man had later called him and asked if he had repossessed it. He said no but he could look it up on GPS and find its location. When he did, he called the police.

The vehicle was located unattended and unlocked at a business on South Duncan Bypass. An employee of a business beside the building where the vehicle was located said it was parked there when he arrived for work around 8 a.m. He said that since then he had not seen anyone around the vehicle.

The victim told the responding officer he’d parked he car at a business on Gadberry Street around 6 p.m. Aug. 4 to have some work done on it. He’d left the keys in the car. The next morning when he called about the vehicle he was told by the owner of the business that he hadn’t seen it. He then called the dealership he’d bought it from.

The vehicle, which is valued at $10,000, was returned to the victim.

Carbreaking

A Cross Anchor man ended up in jail after a person who saw him breaking into a car called police and then followed him down the the street as he tried to walk away.

Ty Wayne Morris, 19, 11960 Highway 56, Cross Anchor, is charged by the public safety department with carbreaking and consumption of liquor by a minor.

The incident report states officers were dispatched the night of Aug. 5 to 405 Lakeview Heights in response to a report of a car being broke into. They were advised by 911 that the suspect had left on foot and the complainant was following him down the street. The suspect was described as wearing black jeans and carrying a white T-shirt over his shoulder.

An officer spotted a white male matching the description walking down the street with a person in a car following him. The officer identified the white male as Morris and the person in the vehicle was the complainant.

The complainant said he saw Morris coming out of a 2005 Toyota Highlander that was parked at 405 Lakeview Heights. He said that after he yelled at him, Morris began walking down the street and he followed him.

Another witness said she’d seen Morris and another person in the Highlander. She said the other person ran off into the woods.

Officers attempted to locate the other person but were unable to do so.

The report states Morris was read his rights and then began to speak to an officer, admitting that he did break into the vehicle. He also said he’d been drinking, consuming a pint of S&G liquor before breaking into the car. Morris was then placed under arrest and transported to jail.

An officer spoke to the owner of the vehicle who said he had left it unlocked. The owner said the vehicle was not damaged and nothing was missing.
