With the win, Louisiana advanced to the Series title game vs. Florida.
Union County received their first loss vs. Florida in Sunday’s secound round action and cameback to win three consecutive elimination games to finish the Series in third place.
The host state’s team scored four devastating first-inning runs in the elimination contest. Union County’s Belles never overcame Louisiana’s early four-run lead.
Louisiana started the first inning with four consecutive singles to score three runs. They put one more run on the board on a fielder’s choice for an early 4-0 lead. Five of Louisiana’s six hits came in the first inning.
Abby Allen- seeing her first action in the Series- tried to get it going for the Belles with a single in the first inning for Union’s lone hit in the first two innings. Union left six runners on base in the game.
Union County’s Belles gained some ground in the third inning as Katie Melton led off the inning with a single. Melton advanced to third base on two sacrifice outs. Union’s La’Quanda Thompson started a two-out rally that scored three runs. Thompson’s single put runners on first and second base. Amber Gibson’s stepped to the plate and drove a two RBI-single to the out field. Union trailed 4-2. Tanijah Hunter scored Gibson on a fielder’s choice. Unoin County trailed 4-3 going to the bottom of the third inning.
Union sufferd great misfortunes during warmups between innings, when Hunter’s throw struck Tristan Tiday’s face. Both players left the field, and Tiday sought medical attention. Hunter later returned to the game after being rattled by the play.
Louisiana took advantage of the delay by putting another run on the board in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Union made another charge at Louisiana’s lead in the fifth inning after going hitless in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Union missed the opportunity to take the lead. After a one-out single by Tiffany Vaughan, Makayla Plemmons smacked the ball through the infield to put runners on first and second base. Union would not be able to bring in either runner as the inning ended with a groundout.
Union left four, key runners on base in the final three innings.
Gibson led off the sixth inning with a double- her second hit of the game. However, Union’s next three batters could not get Gibson around to score.
In the seventh and final inning, Logan Wade took a leadoff walk. With no outs, the go-ahead run stepped in the batter’s box. The next two batters- Ashley Vaughan and Cece Morman- grounded out to move Wade to third base. Wade would not advance any further as Union left another runner on base.
Union finished the Series with wins vs. Louisiana, Pineville, Alabama, Tennesse- and- suffered losses to Florida and Louisiana.
Union County’s Belles had a 4-0 record when scoring five or more runs in the game. In their two losses, the team scored only three combined runs.
Here is a look back at Union County’s trip to the third place finish. Union scored five runs in the first inning vs. Louisiana in Series’ first game to win, 9-5. Ashley Vaughan picked up the win for Union County. The team had ten total hits. Morman homered and Hunter doubled and tripled to lead the way at the plate.
In Sunday’s first game, Florida scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take the 8-1 win.
In Sunday’s elimination game vs. Pinevlle, Union pitcher T. Vaughan dominated Pineville to earn the complete game victory and a 5-2 victory.
Union County defeated Alabama 7-4 in fourth round action. The scored six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Morman had two doubles and an RBI in the game. Katie Melton, Tiday and Wade added two RBIs apiece. A. Vaughan got her second Series win.
Coming in to Tuesday’s game vs. Tennessee, Union County was one of only four teams remaining in the Series. Ten different Unon County batters contributed 17 hits in the 8-5 win vs. Tennessee. T. Vaughan earned her second victory. Eison singled three times and Wade triple and double to lead the way offensively. Hunter and Tiday had a double apiece. Plemmons and Melton singled twice in the fourth-round win.
