Both Union County Dixie Ponytails and Georgetown matched each other run for run until the sixth innin of their 2010 State Tournament opener but Union would eventually out duel them for a thrilling 3-2 victory on Saturday.

Ashley Vinson started the sixth frame with a single to right field. Two batters later she would slide safely underneath the Georgetown catcher’s tag for the game winning run and key tournament victory.

With only four hits, the Union County Dixie Ponytails relied on great defense and pitching to secure the victory Saturday night.

“Our pitching was strong tonight,” said Ponytails head coach Audra Scott. “Hannah (Sailors), Karlie (Lane) and Payton (Martin) gave us what it took to win.”

Ashley Vinson, Laina Vaughan and Morgan Pitt added base hits and Hannah Sailors doubled to rally their team to victory.

The team was scheduled to play Landrum Sunday night in second round action at 8 p.m. at the Timken Sports Complex.
