He worked for South Carolina School Bus Shop and retired after 27 years of service for Norfork Southern Railroad. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Layton Moates and husband Larry of Pauline; a son, Phillip Darriel Layton and wife Jo Ann of Pauline; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Douglas Layton and wife Ginny of Roebuck; sisters-in-law, Edna Layton and Doris Layton of Roebuck; brothers-in-law, Elvin Lawson and wife Sue, Walter Lawson, Richard Moore and wife Jewel, all of Pauline, Wendell Lawson and wife Dianne of Gaffney; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Mansel and J. L. Layton, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Margarett Hatchell Lawson, Joyce Lawson Vise, Sarah Lawson, and Evelyn Lawson, all of Pauline; brothers-in-law, Weldon Lawson, John M. Lawson, Wayne C. Lawson, Donnie “Pete” Lawson, and Carol Vise, all of Pauline.
Funeral services will he held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Friendship Baptist Church of Pauline, conducted by the Rev. Brian Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the committal service in the church social hall.
