UCRD has busy August planned

UNION COUNTY — The end of summer and beginning of the school year means an abundance of activities at the Union County Recreation Department.

Union County Recreation Department Program Director Jessica Gallman said this is a busy time of year for the UCRD with summer camp coming to a close and the department gearing up for activities which begin with the school year.

Gallman said she would like to encourage people to “like” the UCRD Facebook page to stay up to date in regard to UCRD actvities. The page is available at facebook.com/UnionCountyRecreationDepartment or by searching “Union County Recreation Department” on Facebook.

Gallman said parents who go to the page and click “get notifications” will never miss another sign-up.

Summer Camp Week 11

Week 11 of UCRD Summer camp includes a scavenger hunt at 10 a.m. and swimming at the YMCA from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11; an exotic reptile exhibit and a motivational program led by Randy Miller of Greenville at UCRD at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12; bike, rollerblade and skateboard “free time” at South Hills Sports Complex at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13; a trip to Hatcher Gardens in Spartanburg for which a group will leave at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14; and a “End of Summer Par-tay” from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the Union Skate Center.

UCRD After School Program

The UCRD is currently enrolling for its annual after-school program, which will be open until 6 p.m. Monday-Friday. The program offers pick-up for ages 5-12 from Buffalo Elementary, Foster Park Elementary, Monarch Elementary and Sims Middle School.

Gallman said the program offers a great environment which includes homework help and daily snacks, as well as weekly field trips and crafts.

Fees for the program may be paid weekly or daily, and discounts are available for multiple children.

Men’s Fall Softball League Interest Meeting

The Union County Recreation Department will host a meeting to gauge interest in men’s open-league wooden-bat softball at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the UCRD, located at 111 Thomas Street in Union. All players who may be interested are asked to attend.

UCRD Cheerleading

The UCRD is currently holding registration for cheerleading. Registration for Stinger cheerleading — for ages 9-12 — is $45, and registration for Flag cheerleading — for ages 5-8 — is $35.

Registration fees include uniforms and pom-poms for each young lady. There are no tryouts; every person who registers is able to participate.

The deadline for registration is Aug. 22, and a birth certificate and proof of medical insurance are required at registration.
