UNION — Trans-South Wrestling hosted “A Salute to Gamecock Football” at the Union County Fairgrounds Saturday evening.

The guest of honor during the matches was Gamecock All-American and former WWE superstar “The Patriot” Del Wilkes. Wilkes greeted fans and signed autographs throughout the evening. Wilkes was joined by five other former Gamecock football players — all from Union County — including NFL great Darrell Austin, Tommy Simmons, Don Bobo, Monty Means, and UCHS head football coach Steve Taneyhill. Each player was introduced, and Wilkes took the microphone and spoke to the fans in attendance. Wilkes, who is recovering from a surgery last month to replace his first knee replacement, said stepping in the ring to greet fans gave him the itch to get back in there to compete. Fans also enjoyed football trivia with Gamecock prizes.

“It was great to have all those guys here,” said senior referee Tracy Rash. “This was another way for us to reach out to the community and fans who might not have been to an event here before.”

Matches for the evening included the first heavyweight title defense by former WCW star The Stro, who defeated Garrett Sinclair, an opponent of The Stro’s choosing.

“Some people seemed to like The Stro, and some didn’t,” Rash said. “He’s pretty bizarre, calling everyone his children and singing after the matches. As a referee, I never know what to expect when he’s in the ring, but you can’t deny he’s a great wrestler.”

In other action, Ring of Honor star Cedric Alexander defeated Chase “Cauliflower” Brown. Kameron Kade (accompanied by Tessa Blanchard) defeated Alex Avgerinos. The team of Eric Adamz and Scotty Mathews defeated Jaxson James and Michael Frehley to advance to the finals of the ongoing tag team tournament to crown new tag champions. They will face Ernest “Dirty” Robinson and his newly announced tag team partner, former heavyweight champion Deon Johnson on June 7.
