Whitehead to be honored for academic achievement

GREENWOOD — On May 3, 2014, Seth Daniel Whitehead, a senior at Lander University, will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a certification in grades K-12. He will receive the Golden L Award, presented to graduating seniors who have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in the last 60 hours of instruction through Lander University.

On May 2, he will be showcased at a special pinning ceremony by the Lander Education Department; a member of the faculty will pin Seth with a teacher pin, bearing the university seal and his name. The pin will symbolize the completion of the rigorous academic program that Seth has completed.

During the fall of 2013, Seth was inducted into the Blue Key Honor Society at Lander University; he was presented with his graduation stole at the Blue Key Honor Society Ceremony on April 11, 2014. The Blue Key Honor Society extends invitations to students to exemplify leadership, high scholastic achievement, a dedication to service, citizenship, and an adherence to principles of faith.

In addition to these academic achievements, Seth was also a recipient of the Robert Hampton Scholarship in 2012 and 2013, the LIFE Scholarship, and was named to the President’s List in 2013. He fulfilled his student teaching experience requirements in Spring 2014 at both Brewer Middle School and Springfield Elementary School.

As a student at Lander, Seth has enjoyed serving as President of the PEES (Physical Education and Exercise Studies) Club and has taken great pride in planning the Bearcat Breakout 5K for the past three years. The race is meant to inspire health and fitness in the community, as well as raising funds for local charities.

Seth is also a member of the South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, as well as the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has served as President of the Physical Education and Exercise Studies Leadership Board at Lander, planning different events on campus. Dedicated to service, Seth is a Peer Mentor and volunteers with Girls on the Run in Greenwood County; he also serves as an Athlete’s Buddy at the Special Olympics and recently volunteered at Springfield Elementary School Field Day.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Seth is an experienced guitarist and vocalist who performs at festivals, fairs, and at Bogansville UMC, of which he is a member.

Seth is the son of Danny and Ginger Whitehead of West Springs, and is the brother of Shelley Whitehead of New Orleans, LA. He is the grandson of Joan Hanna of Shelby, NC, the late Jim Allen of Shelby, NC and the late Dan and Montez Whitehead of West Springs.
