UNION — Local businesses were awarded for adding Christmas cheer to a local assisted living facility during the holidays.
Heartland Healthcare (formerly Oakmont) Assisted Living held an awards ceremony on Thursday for the winners of its first Festival of Trees and Wreaths. Assisted Living Supervisor/Admissions Coordinator Virginia Babb said she asked local businesses to participate in the facility’s first Festival of Trees and Wreaths by making a donation and bringing a decorated tree or wreath to be displayed in the facility.
“We decided to do this so we could bring joy to our residents’ lives and give the community an opportunity to visit and see the facility beautifully decorated,” Babb said.
Babb also said the festival gave the community a reason to come and fellowship with residents, many of whom do not get an opportunity to spend time with friends unless they come visit.
On Thursday, Babb awarded prizes for the top three decorations in each category. For the Christmas tree category, first prize went to Hospice Care of South Carolina; second prize went to Heartland Hospice; and third prize went to Blue Ridge Hospice. In the Christmas wreath category, first prize went to Gentiva Home Health; second prize went to the Alzheimer’s Association; and third prize went to WBCU.
Residents commented regarding the decorations provided by the companies. Remarks included the following:
“They were absolutely beautiful, and none were alike.”
“Everybody who came in commented about them. They received so many compliments.”
“I said, ‘the White House couldn’t have been any prettier,’ and I meant it.”
Babb said she was delighted that nine companies participated, and she looks forward to this year’s festival.
“The companies really and truly brought joy into our residents’ lives,” Babb said. “They will never know how much.”
