UNION — One day after Christmas, local stores were busy with shopping, special sales, returns and exchanges.

On Thursday, customers hit local stores for exchanges and returns, gift-card shopping, late Christmas shopping, and special after-Christmas sales.

Belk store manager Gwen Ganzaroli said it was apparent that it was the day after Christmas from the number of exchanges and returns in the store, but she said the atmosphere was far from hectic.

“It has been quite pleasant,” Ganzaroli said Thursday afternoon. “We’ve had a nice, steady pace of customers, and they have been in a great mood. everything has gone very smoothly.”

Ganzaroli said numerous customers came bearing gift cards they received, and some were still Christmas shopping for those they had yet to see for the holidays. Ganzaroli also said some customers were already getting the jump on next year’s Christmas lists.

Wal-mart manager-on-duty John David Parkins said the store was not very busy in regard to returns (with a five-six-minute wait in the customer service line), but the store was filled with customers who were making purchases and taking advantage of after-Christmas sales. Parkins said many items such as cologne gift sets were marked 50 percent off, and after Jan. 1, they will be marked down to 75 percent off.

Both stores look for this Saturday to be the busiest in terms of returns and exchanges.
