USC Union receives B.P.O. of DOES scholarship

December 21, 2013

UNION COUNTY — Two students at USC Union will get scholarships this year thanks to the ongoing generosity of a local women’s benevolence group.

The Benevolent, Patriotic Order of DOES #148 has been established in Union, S.C. since 1957. They were organized on Oct. 15, 1957 and had 40 members present to sign the charter at the Union Elks Lodge #1321 on Nov. 15, 1957.

For more than 20 years, the DOES #148 of Union has presented two scholarships to USC Union to support higher education. The scholarships, which are $600 each, are awarded annually to one male student and one female student who are new incoming freshmen. Last year’s recipients were Taylor Mahan and Christian Burton.

A check for the funds for this year’s scholarships was recently presented to USC Union Regional Campus Dean Dr. Alice Taylor-Colbert by Becky Moss, Secretary of DOES #148, and Sandy Montgomery, Treasurer of DOES #148.

“USC Union is a hometown school and we like to support it,” Moss said.

DOES #148 promotes social activities among its members, promotes generous work in the community and is active with their charity and social projects. Every year the DOES have bake sales, poinsettia sales and other campaigns to raise funds for Meals on Wheels, Ronald McDonald House, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Heartland Health Care and even more philanthropies.

“We like to give our funds back to our community,” Montogomery said.

Taylor-Colbert thanked DOES #148 for its generosity, pointing out the importance of financial assistance to not only the students but the community and the region.

“Financial support for students to attend USC Union is one of the best ways we can honor our worthy young people in the community,” Taylor-Colbert said. “We ensure both their future and our region’s future by helping students attain a college education. We are immensely grateful to the DOES for their ongoing commitment to education.”
