Amazon, Belk continuing to recruit workers

UNION — The efforts to meet the needs of fulfillment centers in the Jonesville area and in Spartanburg for workers will continue into November at the SCWorks Union office.


SCWorks Business Services Consultant Anthony Vitale announced Wednesday that Staffmark will hold a recruiting event for the Belk Fulfillment Center in Jonesville this Friday from 9 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m. Vitale said Staffmark is looking to hire up to 100 to people for positions at the fulfillment center. He said the positions will be seasonal and temp to hire after 90 days for the center’s first and second shifts.

Vitale said that the entry level salary for each position will be at least $9 an hour.

Persons interested in working at the fulfillment cetner must come to Friday’s recruiting event prepared for a brief interview. If hired, they will have to go undergo a background check and drug testing.

Friday will be the second of three recruitment events Staffmark will conduct on behalf of the Belk Fulfillment Center in a little over a month.

The previous recruitment event was held at the SCWorks Union office on Oct. 11 and the third will be held Friday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. at the SCWorks Gaffney office, 131 Wilmac Road, Gaffney.


Vitale also announced that Staffmark/SMX will hold a recruitment event for the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Spartanburg on Friday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m.-noon at the SCWorks Union office.

The event will be the latest in the efforts of Staffmark/SMX to recruit up to 1,100 people to fill positions in the fulfillment center’s warehouse. The fulfillment center is hiring for both full-time and part-time positions on all shifts.

On Tuesday, SMX Assistant Recruiting Manager Jim Ryan conducted a recruitment event for the fulfillment center at the SCWorks office. Ryan said the event drew more than 60 applicants. He said he was very pleased with the results and with the atmosphere at the SCWorks office.

“I was very pleased with the turnout,” Ryan said. “This was very enjoyable because I liked this atmosphere because we could do more one on one.”

Ryan met with small groups of applicants at a time, providing them with information about the positions being offered and the conditions they would be working under if hired. He also interviewed them and briefed them about the rest of the hiring process.

“I interviewed each person so they will not have to go through the interview process when they get there,” Ryan said. “What they will be doing is a skills test, a simulation of using a scanning gun. Then they go through a quick interview asking, for instance, they’ve ever worked in a warehouse and what shift they are looking for. Then they take a drug test which is sent out and it takes three days for the results to get back.”

Ryan said that while awaiting the results of the drug test, applicants undertake an online portion of the job hiring process which includes briefings on the benefits package Amazon offers.

Those hired will be able to earn up to $11.50 an hour.

Ryan said Wednesday that approximately 10 of those who participated in Tuesday’s recruitment event traveled to the SMX office in Spartanburg. He said they went through the rest of the hiring process and have been hired and are now awaiting the results of the background check and drug test before they go to work at Amazon. Once the results are in, Ryan said those that pass will be called in to work as soon as Amazon informs SMX.

Persons who attend the Nov. 15 recruiting event are requested to first apply online at apply.smjobs.com to help streamline the process.

In addition to undergoing drug testing and a background check, to be considered for the positions applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age.

• Have a high school diploma or GED.

• Be able lift up to 49 pounds and stand for shift duration.

Applicants must also bring with them two forms of identification and proof of education to the recruitment event.

Located at 103 W. Main St., the SCWorks office provides employers with space for job fairs and hiring events. Over the past several months a number of employers have made use of the facility including Quality Inn, the S.C. Department of Corrections, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, the Dollar General Distribution Center, VPS Convenience Stores, and Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, as well as staffing agencies representing local or area businesses. SCWorks also promotes these activites in the community and provided the companies and organizations with administrative services.
