UNION — Sometimes children have more influence than we think. These 6th graders in Mrs. Susan Gilstrap’s 6th grade honors English language arts class tested their “powers of persuasion” recently.

These 11- and 12-year-olds each chose a restaurant they wish we had in Union, and they wrote letters to their CEOs. In the letters, students asked the companies to consider opening a location in our town; many times even offering suggestions as to where the businesses could locate. For instance, one student suggested Arby’s could open up in the old McDonald’s building — as they once did many years ago.

They also researched addresses for corporate offices, and actually mailed the letters. R.J. Sanders mailed a letter to Gatti’s and received a response from Gatti’s President, Steve Bart. Bart stated that his company is always looking for good locations for new restaurants and Gatti’s would “keep their eyes open for sites in Union.”

So, if you see a Sonic, Chick-fil-A, Golden Corral, and many other wonderful restaurants, you can thank this persuasive group of 6th graders for helping Union grow!
