UCAC Staff Report For The Union Daily Times
October 13, 2013
UNION — The Union County Arts Council is now featuring a show called “Harvest Moon Musings — variations on a theme” that celebrates the harvest moon through painting, literary art and song. This is believed to be a first for UCAC as only works of art are usually shown in the gallery. The show is based on a photograph by Harold Senn called “Moon Over Santuc.”
Nanette Jenkins, chairperson for the show, explained, “Our Tuesday morning ‘Painting with Coffee’ group saw Harold’s photograph and I thought that it would be a great idea to have everybody paint their own interpretation of it. Then, in talking with other UCAC members, the idea came up for us to do a whole exhibit based on that photograph.”
After realizing that there wouldn’t be enough art to fill the gallery walls for the show the decision was made to include two other art forms; literary art and music.
“We thought that it would be interesting to have people submit poems or stories that they’d written about the moon,” continued Jenkins. “Then we got excited about having our Monday Night Musicians perform moon-themed songs at the show’s reception. It just took off from there.”
So, in addition to the paintings by the UCAC Artists’ Guild, there are various “musings” contributed by local writers. Also, an invitation has been extended to Randall Ivey’s English classes at USC-Union to take part.
The exhibit, which will run through Nov. 1, will be celebrated with a reception/concert/reading on Oct. 24.
“This unique reception will be fun!” said Jenkins. “We’ll have art on the walls, poetry and short-story readings and music. And everything will have a moon theme; even the refreshments, which will include Moon Pies, harvest stew, Santuc Moonshine (apple cider) and much more.”
The reception will be held at the UCAC gallery on Main Street in Union from 5-7 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
