UNION — The Union Belk store will host a mobile mammography unit that will provide free mammograms.

Store Manager Gwen Ganzaroli announced Wednesday that the BelksGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center will visit the store on Thursday Oct. 24 from 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. The 39-foot, state-of-the-art facility will provide free, convenient mammogram screenings to women who meeting the following criteria:

• Are 40 years of age or older.

• Have no breast concerns.

• Have not had a mammogram screening in the last 12 months.

• Have a primary care physician.

Those who meet this criteria are eligible to call 855-655-BMMC (2662) to schedule an appointment with the mobile mammography center during its visit to Union. Ganzaroli said there are 32 slots available for the visit.

All the screenings will be performed by Charlotte Radiology’s licensed, female mammography-certified technologists. A board-certified radiologist specializing in breast imaging will interpret the mammogram. The confidential results will be sent to the patient and her primary care physician.

“I’m excited this is coming to our community,” Ganzaroli said. “This is a good service and we offer it to people who need it but might not get it on their own.”

Belk, the nation’s largest privately operated department store, launched BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography in partnership with Charlotte Radiology. This center will bring convenient digital screening and awareness to all Belk markets with the journey beginning in 113 stores throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee through January 2014.

Belk’s $6 million investment in this program marks the retailer’s deep commitment to women’s health issues and breast cancer education and is the company’s single largest charitable contribution to date. Belk is the only retailer of its kind to form a partnership alongside community and health organizations by extending breast cancer screening and increasing breast cancer awareness through its own operation.
