UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets picked up their first win of the season Friday night over the undefeated Newberry Bulldogs with a final score of 35-16.
The first big play of the game was an interception by Union County senior LB Braylin Brown, which was followed up with a touchdown pass from QB Ben Beck to T.J. Foster, giving the Jackets a 7-0 lead.
Newberry answered with a touchdown of their own, tying the game.
Union County RB Michael Guin came back with another touchdown, putting the Yellow Jackets back in the lead with a score of 14-7.
After a big sack by Jamarcus Henderson — one of numerous sacks delivered by Henderson during the game — on 3rd and 17, Newberry was forced to kick a field goal, making the score 14-10.
Jordan Spencer then returned Newberry’s kick to their 49 yard line, which led to Spencer scoring a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half, putting Union County ahead 21-10.
In the second half of the game, Union County’s Scott Brannon received a touchdown pass, increasing Union County’s lead to 28-10.
Newberry had control of the ball, and just after another one of Jamarcus Henderson’s big sacks, freshman Shi Smith was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting the team back 15 yards. Union County was forced to punt. Newberry’s next drive was unsuccessful, and they were forced to punt.
In the 4th quarter, Scott Brannon caught an 18-yard pass from Beck, making the score 35-10 after the PAT.
Newberry threw an interception — picked off by Jordan Spencer. As Union County began its offense, Beck threw an interception, giving control of the ball right back to Newberry.
Newberry was able to score once more before the end of the game, and the final score was 35-16 in favor of Union County.
Next week, Union County hosts Woodruff for its first region game of the season.
